There is a powerful shift that occurs when a student’s creative process meets a community audience. While the "art" truly happens in the quiet moments of trial, error, and perseverance in the classroom, the gallery offers a dedicated space to honor that journey. This Wednesday, Central Middle School is proud to open a new, permanent Student Art Gallery—a space designed specifically to celebrate the curiosity and dedication of our students.
One Night, Two Stages
We're bringing two worlds together for you in one big night! We know our families are busy, so while the gallery makes its debut, our students will also be taking the stage for the Central Talent Show.
Gallery Doors Open: 5:45 PM
Talent Show Starts: 6:00 PM
Admission: A$5 per person or $10 per family (All proceeds directly support our Central Arts Department programs).
Attendees are encouraged to stroll through the gallery before the show or during intermission. To make the evening even more interactive, we’re hosting a People’s Choice Award. We’ve narrowed it down to six standout pieces—two from each grade—and we need our community to help us pick the winner! The "Best in Show" will be announced live on stage at the end of the night.
A Dream Realized
For Central Art Teacher Ellen Clark, the opening of this gallery represents the next step in a career dedicated to community education. Before joining our team at Central, Clark served as the Children's Outreach Librarian at the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library. With a Bachelor’s degree in Art and a Master’s in Library and Information Science, Clark has long focused on blending academic literacy with creative instruction—a background that also includes serving as an instructor for the Kokomo Symphony Youth Orchestra.
When Clark transitioned into her role at Central, her goal was to elevate the way student work is viewed and respected within the school and the wider community.
"There is so much talent here," Clark says. "This isn't about giving them permission to be artists—they already are. It's about giving them a professional home for their hard work. It’s a place where they have control over their environment and can share who they are, which is so important at this age."

This transformation was a true team effort, sparked by instructional coach Mary Page and fully support by Principal Dr. Landrum and Assistant Principal Nicole Geary, who worked together to help secure the resources needed to turn a former storage room into a vibrant, curated space where students from all three grade levels can see their creative efforts on display.
More Than Just a Project
At Central, being an IB World School and an Integrated Arts School means our students are always looking at the "why" behind the "how." A finished painting or sculpture is often the result of weeks of cross-disciplinary investigation. Our students don't just "make art"; they research, write, and analyze. Before a single brushstroke is made, a student might be in the library studying the history of civilization, in a science lab observing biological patterns, or in a social studies classroom analyzing global economic systems. This academic foundation ensures that every piece in the gallery is a reflection of a deeper understanding of the world around us.
Every mask, collage, and painting in the gallery represents a student learning to explore the world through a different lens.
Here is a glimpse into how our Wildkats are connecting their classroom learning to their creative work:
Global Perspective: By exploring the history, geography, and cultural frameworks of various civilizations, students bring authentic symbolism and a deeper understanding of regional systems to their handmade masks and Egyptian papyrus art.
Historical Inquiry: Students analyze the Cubist movement to understand how shifting perspectives can change the way we interpret a single object, bridging history and art.
Scientific Illustration: Blending biology and art through the study of reptile anatomy and pupil function allows for the creation of incredibly detailed "Dragon Eyes," which are paired with original written stories to strengthen narrative skills.
Building a Pathway
This gallery is a natural piece connecting the Arts Pathway throughout Kokomo Schools. At Central, we are proud to guide our students from their first creative sparks in elementary school to the advanced programs at Kokomo High School. By the time our Wildkats leave Central, they’ve learned that art isn't just about a finished product—it’s about the courage to keep practicing, the willingness to try again, and the joy of sharing their journey with their community.
"I tell them to 'trust the process,'" Clark adds. "Whether they are making 3D Pop Art or sketching a portrait, they are learning that their unique perspective matters."
We invite the community to attend with our Central families and staff, and—most importantly—our students this Wednesday. Let’s celebrate the creativity that makes Central such a special place to create and grow, the Wildkat Way!
